Before his broadcast career, he worked as an educator, earning a bachelor's degree in education and a master's in education with certification as an educational administrator. He grew up in Victoria, Texas.
He helped move the National Tropical Weather Conference to a free live broadcast so its presenters could reach a wider audience.
